October 6, 2019 World Communion Sunday
A few weeks ago I “hired” 5 year old Conor, Richard and Heidi's little boy to help move some stuff around in the yard. We worked for a little while and went in and were eating a snack. He told me this was his first job. And I thought he'd be excited when I told him I was going to pay him $5.00. But when he heard that, he responded, “I was planning on $15.00.” I said, “I'm sorry, Conor, I'm not going to pay you $15.00.” He sighed and said, “Okay, I'll take $10.”
He wanted more. That's a bit like the disciples in today's gospel. They have walked with Jesus, seen what he could do, had in fact gone out on missions and done great works. Jesus had given them a foundation for their faith, but they wanted more. But don't we all have a bit of that wanting more? More money, better car, bigger TV, fancier clothes, more faith? Always more.
