A Tale of Two Prodigals

2 Corinthians 5: 16-21; Luke 15:1-3, 11b-32

This parable is one of the most famous stories in all of history. Jesus, in a few short paragraphs, gives us a picture of God by using types of people we would certainly recognize from our own lives here on earth. It is known as the Parable of the Prodigal Son and I should give a formal definition of Prodigal, “spending money or resources freely and recklessly; wastefully extravagant.”1 That certainly pegs the younger brother, but prodigal seems to hold a broader meaning in many circles today. It can mean rebellious or uncooperative. It almost always deals with a separation for whatever reason.

Psalm 27, Luke 13: 31-35
Our Psalm for today began with our verse of the month. That could be called a coincidence, but I prefer to think of it as God's providence. And so it seems this Psalm should be the focus of today's sermon message.
Mark Kolle supplied this verse with this reasoning, “It's a verse I've carried about on deployments & other ventures. A calming assurance you could say.” And that is exactly what this Psalm is about. It begins with 6 verses that would be a calming assurance, the verses about trusting God even in war. Verse 3, “Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war rise up against me, yet I will be confident.” But it was more than simply confidence that all will be well, it was confidence that God hears and acts; and so the psalmist shifts into prayer, “7Hear, O LORD, when I cry aloud, be gracious to me and answer me! Do not cast me off, do not forsake me, O God of my salvation! Do not give me up to the will of my adversaries” As it did for Mark in his deployments, the psalm affirms God's goodness and power of protection.
