The Shadow of A Doubt

Readings: Acts 2: 14a, 22-32; 1 Peter 1: 3-9; John 20: 19-31
April 23, 2017

After our Easter service last Sunday, Pastor Tom...and I were discussing preaching. Tom was chaplain at various colleges and did some supply preaching as well. We agreed on his observation that supply preachers get called the most on the Sunday after Christmas and the Sunday after Easter. So I have preached on this passage from John on doubting Thomas many times. And you'd think after twenty-some years, I'd have said about all there is to say about it. But I haven't. So sit back and listen.
Tom also shared an anecdote with me. He says he had a friend who had given up on going to church. Tom asked him why and his friend said, “Well, the music is always the same, they just sing two hymns—Joy to the World and Jesus Christ is Risen Today.”
The Apostle Thomas is best known for his part in today’s reading and hence, his nickname Doubting Thomas. But you can be sure, he wasn't the only doubter on that first Easter.

The Rolling Stone

Jeremiah 31:1-6; Colossians 3:1-4; Matthew 28:1-10
April 16, 2017 Easter!

It's Easter morning! The most glorious day in the church year! We are gathered to celebrate the resurrected Jesus, the empty tomb, new life!
But first a joke; a rolling stone joke. A frog goes into a bank and approaches the teller. He can see from her name plate that the teller's name is Patricia Whack.
So, he says, "Ms. Whack, I'd like to get a loan to buy a boat and go on a long vacation." Patricia looks at the frog in disbelief and asks how much he wants to borrow. The frog says "$50,000." The teller asks his name and the frog says that his name is Kermit Jagger, his dad is Mick Jagger, and that it is OK, he knows the bank manager. Patti explains that $50,000 is a substantial amount of money and that he will need to secure some collateral against the loan. She asks if he has anything he can use as collateral.

What We Have Received From the Lord
Exodus 12: 1-14, 1 Corinthians 11: 23-26, John 13: 1-17, 34-35. Maundy Thursday, 2017 I come from a card playing family. '500', Whist, Up and Down, Cribbage, Gin Rummy, Kings in the Corner, Canasta. You name it, we probably played it, except Pinochle and Bridge. Never learned them. Anyways, I probably wouldn't have dared announce that in church 75 years ago. No card playing was allowed back then. In fact, I've been told we couldn't even call our folding tables card tables.... Now when we play cards in our house, there is a phrase we use when someone unexpectedly leads trump. We say they “played a Bouman.” Now if you asked anyone besides me why we say that, I 'd suggest they'd be unable to tell you. Well, it's a tradition that began when I was in college. We played a lot of cards in our apartment at Willmar Community College. We had a friend who like to lead trump. His name was Mark...Bouman. And so 40 years ago, playing a Bouman began a tradition that carries on today. Maundy Thursday is a night of tradition.

Isaiah 50:4-9a; Philippians 2:5-11; Matthew 21:1-11
April 9, 2017

Julie and I just got home from almost two weeks on a journey out East to Gettysburg, Philadelphia and Washington. A great trip which we thoroughly enjoyed. It was a rather simple journey for us; the bus picked us up in front of our house on Monday morning. We rode the bus to restaurants, hotels, tourist sites. Our only real responsibility was to get on the bus when it was time to go to the next site on our journey.
Today we mark a new site on the faith journey of our two confirmands, Mariah and Katelyn. We first met them 9 years ago when they joined Mary and Roger's family. They officially began their faith journey, got on the bus of faith if you will, on November 16, 2008 when they were baptized right here in this sanctuary...by me.
