Most High & Eternal God - June 28, 2015 - First Presbyterian

Today's sermon is the third in a series on the names of God, using Greek and Hebrew translations so we gain a deeper insight into what God is revealing about himself to us.

I asked us to do some homework this past week. We were to say aloud to ourselves every day "God sees me." I also asked us to read Philippians 4:6-7 & 1 Corinthians 10:13 – to note the promises God makes us and to note what we need do to receive these promises. I hope we continue saying "God sees me." - it's a good spiritual practice. I will refer to our scripture readings later in the sermon.

Today, let's look at Daniel 4, the story of Nebuchadnezzar, where God is called El Elyon (el el YOHN).

God Almighty Who Sees Me by Judy Holmes

When I preached at the end of May on Trinity Sunday, I talked about God revealing himself to us through various names for God. We most often read God or Lord in our Bible translations today. When we go back to the Greek and Hebrew translations of the Bible, we gain a deeper understanding of God's attributes.

In May, I talked about "Elohim" and "El." Elohim means "Mighty Creator." Elohim is used when we read about God as the creator - the one who created from nothing. El means "God of Power & Might." El is used when we read about God's vast power - a power unlike any other. Elohim and El.

Today, I want to share two more names for God. The names for God are in the bulletin. The first name is El Roi (el raw EE) - it means "the God who sees me."

What is the Kingdom of God?

What is the Kingdom of God?

Psalm 20; 2 Corinthians 5: 6-17; Mark 4: 26-34

June 14, 2015

The kingdom of God is a common theme in the gospels. It is also spoken of as the kingdom of heaven. I wondered how common it was and I counted these two terms used 89 times in the four gospels. That's a lot. So if it is used that often, it is probably pretty important that we understand what it means. Most of us probably have a vague understanding of the terms. Heaven. The new Jerusalem. Israel restored. Here and now or somewhere future. I felt it was important to truly get to the heart of the Kingdom's meaning...so I Googled it. There were 204 million entries for the Kingdom of God. So I read through them all and will summarize them for you now....I seriously did google it but I didn't read all the responses to “What is the Kingdom of God?” But I will share some important answers. More importantly, when I was done with the Google, I went a more traditional route looking for a doctrinally correct answer. I looked it up in hard copy of our Book of Confessions. I will share from there later.

Do Not Lose Heart

Psalm 138; 2 Corinthians 4: 13-5: 1; Mark 3: 20-35

June 7, 2015

When I was a kid one of my favorites books was a sports book about strange happenings in sports; it might have been part of Ripley's Believe it or Not. One I recall was about an unfortunate woman who was attending a baseball game, I've got the details for you: In 1957, Richie Ashburn, centerfielder for the Phillies, his a foul ball that went into the stands and hit a spectator named Alice Roth. As she was being treated by medical personnel, Ashburn hit another foul ball and hit her again! That's a bad day! Charlie Brown once told Linus, “Sometimes I feel like I just want to run away from everything.” Snoopy overheard and reflected in his mind, “I remember having that feeling once when I was at the Daisy Hill Puppy Farm. I climbed over the fence...but I was still in the world!”

Anybody here ever feel that the world is a series of bad days and feel like running away from your troubles? The apostle Paul had about as many problems as anybody
