In God's Good Time
June 25, 2017
As I explained last week, we are covering Genesis stories for the foreseeable future. We read the creation last week and we jump ahead to Abraham and Sarah in today's reading. There is lot's of ground in between and I will cover the approximately 2000 years in between Adam and Abraham in the next five minutes or so.
First, Julie told me this little story from the garden of Eden. The oldest computer can be traced back to Adam and Eve. It was an apple. But with extremely limited memory—just one bite...then everything crashed.
Adam and Eve had Cain and Abel which most of us know. But the genealogical line from Adam to Jesus actually went through their third son, Seth.

In The Beginning God

Genesis 1: 1-2: 4a (we will read unison reading #592 in HLC)
Romans 5: 12-16; John 1: 1-5; 14-18
June 18, 2017

For the next 10 Sundays, our Old Testament lessons will be from the book of Genesis. Now I know that biblical literacy in America is at a low point, but how many of you can find Genesis in your bible? Good! For most, if not all of the next 10 weeks, I will be basing my sermon on the Genesis reading. In all honesty, those 10 readings don't begin to cover the history found in Genesis so I will be supplementing the readings from the lectionary with history that would be missed strictly going by the schedule. And we miss out on the full story without the missing information. For Genesis does tell a story. And my hope is that we discover the story of God and humanity as we share the story and the stories. We keep in mind that Genesis isn't written merely as history but as the history of God's involvement in the world. We have to read these stories, as with all of the bible, with a discerning spirit and with prayer for wisdom from the Holy Spirit.

A Lightning Rod

Numbers 11:24-30; Acts 21: 1-21; John 7:37-39
June 4, 2017

I checked our church's roof-line this week. I was wondering if we have any lightening rods protecting our building from the effects of being struck by lightning. I did this in response to an article I read, “A Lightning Rod Instead of a Cross.” No author was listed so I can't give proper credit. But he began with this thought, “If it were up to most of its members, modern churches would have lightning rods on their steeples instead of crosses.” He said this in reference to the events Kay read to us in Acts. He suggested that a metaphor for the wondrous events of Pentecost is the church being struck by lightning. Then he points out most churches would likely choose a lightning rod because, “The lightning rods would serve as protection against such events ever happening again.”
