David vs Goliath, You vs Your Giant

1 Samuel 17; 2 Corinthians 6: 1-13; Mark 4: 35-41

1 Samuel 17 assorted verses
I'm doing things a little differently today. You may have noticed we saved the Old Testament reading for last, and that's because we are looking at it in close detail. And you may say, “Well, we all know the story of David and Goliath, we've heard it since we were children.” And that's true and that's good. But often in the “children's” version, we don't get all the details. And you know that old saying... “the devil is in the details.” But did you know that this phrase is an outgrowth of an even older phrase? The original phrase was “God is in the detail.” So we are going to try to find God in the details of the story, but more, we will try to find meaning for us beyond the boy vs giant story we all know.

1 Samuel 15: 34-16: 3; 2 Corinthians5:6-10, 14-17; Mark 4: 26-34
June 17, 2018

I begin today with the end of the reading. “With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it; he did not speak to them except in parables,”. What is a parable and why did Jesus use so many of them? And why didn't explain them to us most of the time?
Jesus in fact told his disciples why, but it is not the clearest answer. When they asked this question, he told them, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but to others I speak in parables, so that ‘looking they may not perceive, and listening they may not understand.’” (Luke 8:10) To paraphrase, the disciples were given a level of understanding that the crowds did not have. In fact, there is a level of understanding that comes to those who are interested in hearing God's word that is denied to those who refuse to heed God's word.

1 Samuel 8: 4-11, 16-20; 2 Corinthians 4: 13-5:1; Mark 3: 20-35
June 10, 2018

When we read today's gospel story, we wonder about it. It seems kind of strange. Here is Jesus in the middle of a disorganized crowd, so crowded he couldn't even eat. Yet when his mother and brothers arrive, he dismisses them... apparently. They think he's lost his mind, or worse yet, is possessed by the devil. What in the world is going on here?

June 3, 2018 Graduation Sunday

It is graduation Sunday. We have one graduate to celebrate. And we do celebrate Savannah and the gifts she has presented to our church through the years. They are many and varied, but the one we most recognize is her gift of music. It was perhaps unusual and a little unfair to ask her to bring us special music in the midst of her busy-ness. But I felt that it is hard for us to send her forth without celebrating at least once more her wonderful gift.
