You Can't Take it With You

Psalm 107: 1-9, 43; Colossians 3: 1-11; Luke 12: 13-21
July 31, 2016

“You can't take it with you.” We've all heard this saying many times. Our parable today finds Jesus making a point about a wealthy man who accumulated much and had to leave it all behind. But it seems not everyone believes you can't take it with you. A rich man discovered he had a terminal illness. He called together three men whom he trusted and gave them each $500,000. He said to them, “I know I can't take it with me, but I want to try. I want you each to promise you will put the $500,000 I gave you into my casket at my funeral...I want it buried with me just in case.
And so it was that after the funeral, the three men got together to discuss the situation. The first man, a doctor, confessed that he didn't put the money in the casket. He gave it to the hospital’s Foundation to build a new children's wing. The second, a priest also confessed, “I didn't put the money in the casket either. I gave it to the Little Sister of the Poor to build a new treatment center.” The third man, a lawyer, replied in disbelief. “I just want you to know I carried out his wishes. He was buried with my personal check for $500,000 in his casket!”

The Practice of Prayer

Psalm 85, Colossians 2: 6-15; Luke 11: 1-13
July 24, 2016

I hope you have noticed by now the little quiz included in your bulletin. It is intended only as a way to provoke our thoughts on our individual prayer lives. The disciples in today's gospel asked Jesus to teach them to pray. Jesus answered with what we now know as the Lord's Prayer. That is one prayer, it is not the only way we pray. But it does give us a certain guideline to direct our prayers in the proper manner. I don't believe it was intended to be a prayer memorized and repeated over and over without much thought. And that happens far to often...for me and I assume for others. But we do need direction and today I'm going to use this passage on prayer to try and share some tips and ideas that I hope will help you in your prayer life.

What distracted Martha?

Psalm 52, Colossians 1: 15-28; Luke 10: 38-42
July 17, 2016

This is one of the more familiar stories in the bible; Mary sitting at the feet of Jesus while Martha is very busy doing the housekeeping chores. A couple stories; newlywed Jennifer called her mother very upset. She explained that her husband Ted wasn't happy with her. “Ted told me I was a terrible housekeeper. I got so angry, I ran into the...uh...what do you call it...oh yeah, the kitchen.” Many of us remember Roseanne, not exactly known as a domestic wizard. She said, “When they comes out with a riding vacuum cleaner, then I'll clean the house.” Oh, and I saw this posted on line, “I keep seeing 'housekeeping schedules' on Pinterest. Here's my housekeeping schedule - do the absolute minimum until someone's coming over, then clean like a crazy person.”
It seems like Martha was the one working like a crazy person in today's gospel. And it seems that often the message on this story is to decide which sister got it right. I'm going to suggest today that there wasn't one right and one wrong, but that they were both honoring the Lord in the best way they knew.

Psalm 30, Galatians 6: 7-16, John 8: 31-34
July 3, 2016

Tomorrow our country turns 140 years old. It is a country founded on the ideals of liberty, on freedom, on responsibility and on God-given rights. It is a country that was founded in division and strife, in war. It is a country, a democracy that has faced plenty of tough times it her 140 years. Often blessed with great leaders and faithful citizens yet a democracy that is not perfect, that is too often stalemated. But as Winston Churchill said, “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others.”
The nation celebrates the formation of this nation every fourth of July. Many churches do not for various reasons, and we don’t every year. We were inspired this year by our Christian Community trip to Branson on the Road. They did a salute to America. We will salute our ideals of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, but we will also be very aware of the need we have for God's hand of blessing upon our nation. Let's sing a song that celebrates our nation and includes a prayer for God to shed his grace upon us. O Beautiful For Spacious Skies 564 PH
