Psalm 1, James 3: 13-4: 3, Mark 9: 30-37

September 20, 2015

The gospel reading has two paragraphs with two distinct lessons today so I’ll be giving two sermons for the price of one. And each will be shorter than normal. Each will have an introduction as well. The first lesson has Jesus giving the second prediction of his impending death. The disciples reaction? “But they did not understand what he was saying and were afraid to ask him.” It reminds of how husbands and wives can relate...the men either don't listen, they don't understand or they, too, are afraid to ask for clarification. There was the husband who told his friend that his wife was leaving him. The friend asked him why and he answered, “I'm not sure, I think she said something about me never listening to her. I really wasn't paying attention.”

Declaring God's Glory

Psalm 19, James 3: 1-12, Mark 8: 27-38

August 13, 2015

Weather today at the lake... Wonderful scriptures... Outside, look at Psalm 19.

As I considered today's reading, I couldn't help but relate this Psalm to our time outside worshiping in nature. “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” And our question for today: is this true? Is God really revealed in the wonders of the heavens and the wonders of the earth? For some, it seems to be so; for others they observe the laws of nature, see the mountains and valleys, study the cycles of nature and are able to leave God out of it completely. This thought reminded me of the Alaska Cruise Julie and I went on. We went into Glacier Bay and got up close to a glacier “calving”. Unbelievable grandeur and power and colors. A gentleman standing close by said that it was worthy of something Walt Disney would create. I said—maybe aloud maybe not—that I thought this creation went a bit above Walt Disney's pay grade. This morning, I want to encourage us recognize God in the wonders of nature.

Starry, Starry Night

Psalm 125; James 2: 1-17; Mark 7: 24-37

September 6, 2015

An odd title for a sermon, huh? Can you play a few notes of the popular tune Heidi? This song, “Starry Starry Night or Vincent”, was based on the painting “Starry Night”. I had to take Art History in college, it turned out I really enjoyed the class quite a bit. We did study the Painting “Starry Night” by Vincent van Gogh. It is a famous painting of swirling clouds, bright stars and a crescent moon-shown of course on your bulletin cover. Beside this famous painting, van Gogh is perhaps best known for cutting off his ear. What I want to tell you about today is a much lesser known aspect of this famous artist. Both his father and grandfather were pastors and Vincent sought admission to seminary but failed his entrance exam. He then volunteered to the mission field and served at an impoverished community of coal miners in the South of Belgium. This was not a sought after site, pastors were often sent there as punishment. Vincent preached and ministered to the sick and the very poor; he drew pictures of the miners and their families. He earned the nickname, “Christ of the Coal mines.”
