Guess Who

Joel 2:23-32; 2 Timothy 4:6-8,16-18; Luke 18:9-14

One of my favorite games for little kids was “Guess Who”. It had two trays with pictures of men and women with identifying features. The two players would take turns trying to eliminate all the possible people until only one correct person was left. You would ask a question like, “Does your person have blue eyes?” Depending on the answer, you could eliminate a number of possibilities. “Does your person have a beard? Is your person a woman?” Eventually, only one possibility remains. The first one to guess who the person was won.
I was reminded of this as I considered the story Jesus told today. Given the two people mentioned, which would you eliminate if the question were asked, “Is this person righteous?' How about, “Is this person a sinner?” From all outward appearances, the answer is simple; the Pharisee is righteous, the taxman is a sinner. But Jesus has a way of turning what seems obvious into a lesson for us all.

Jeremiah 31: 27-34; 2 Timothy 3: 14-4: 5; Luke 18: 1-8
October 20, 2019 Ecumen

The lectionary readings have included passages from the Old Testament prophet Jeremiah for 6 weeks in a row now. I've chosen to preach from his words several times. Today is the last Sunday we read from Jeremiah and I want to share some information on the setting in which Jeremiah lived and preached.
So who is Jeremiah? No, he's not a bullfrog! He's not a good friend of mine. It is not always easy to understand the words he said, but we're gonna try.

Who here believes they can pass an eighth grade test to move on to the next grade? I'd like to think I could, but I do know that I'd struggle to pass such a test from a hundred years ago. Now I believe we have a pretty good school system here, but I doubt many of our eighth grades could pass this test from 1912. I'm going to give you a few questions from the test and see how you can do.
1.-2. Spelling: 50 words for the student to spell, I will give you just 2; rhinoceros and antecedent.
    1. Arithmetic: At $1.62 ½ a cord what is the cost of a pile of wood 24 feet x 4 feet x 6'3”?
    2. Grammar: how many parts of speech are there? Define each one. ( noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, & interjection.)

Lamentations 1: 1-6; 2 Timothy 1: 1-14; Luke 17: 5-10
October 6, 2019 World Communion Sunday
A few weeks ago I “hired” 5 year old Conor, Richard and Heidi's little boy to help move some stuff around in the yard. We worked for a little while and went in and were eating a snack. He told me this was his first job. And I thought he'd be excited when I told him I was going to pay him $5.00. But when he heard that, he responded, “I was planning on $15.00.” I said, “I'm sorry, Conor, I'm not going to pay you $15.00.” He sighed and said, “Okay, I'll take $10.”
He wanted more. That's a bit like the disciples in today's gospel. They have walked with Jesus, seen what he could do, had in fact gone out on missions and done great works. Jesus had given them a foundation for their faith, but they wanted more. But don't we all have a bit of that wanting more? More money, better car, bigger TV, fancier clothes, more faith? Always more.
