Signs

November 29, 2015 First Sunday in Advent

There is a song from my High School days—I won't sing it—Rhonda--but the words go like this: “Sign, sign, everywhere are signs, blockin' out the scenery, blowing my mind. Do this, don’t do that, can't you read the sign?” Our gospel reading has Jesus talking about signs; signs that his followers are supposed to read: “signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves.” Signs that may indeed blow our minds. Got me thinking about signs...when Julie and I lived in Atwater, there was a sign that blew our minds. It was as you enter the Park by the lake. There was a sign that said, “Welcome to our Park” and directly under it a “Do Not Enter” sign.

What?  The Curtains?

Mark Chamberlain. Perhaps the most memorable of his sermon introductions is my sermon title for today. I know my family remembers it, we say it quite often. Here is the story but I can't tell it like Mark. It comes from a Monty Python movie, I'm not even sure which one. Mark says the king brought his son over to the window of their castle, pulled back the curtains and said, “One day, my son, all this will be yours.” And the son replied, “What? The Curtains?”

Preparation for this week's sermon began over a month ago. Here's what transpired: Julie and I were eating lunch at Mongo's Grill in St. Cloud. We'd spent the morning at the St. Cloud Christian School with two of our granddaughters, Maggie and Allie, for Grandparents Day. A day off for us and a nice, enjoyable-relaxing day. I got a call from our presbytery moderator Candice Adams asking me to give the sermon for the October Presbytery meeting. Now I have to admit, that kinda took care of relaxing, it was exciting and scary.

Psalm 24; Revelation 21: 1-6a; John 11: 23-44
November 1, 2015 Service of Remembrance

Our Service of Remembrance. It is a solemn day. A day we, in community, remember our loved ones who have gone on to be with the Lord in the past year. It is a day we celebrate the promises of life in Christ as we remember. It is a day of joy for the good news is that Jesus has won the victory over death...“he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more,” as Amy read in our epistle. Those are wonderful promises, and we await the fulfillment someday. But today...we do mourn, there is pain, we do shed tears. And its not because we don't believe the promises; look at Jesus in today's gospel lesson. He wept at the grave of Lazarus...even though he knew that he was about to resuscitate his friend.
