Isaiah 2: 1-5; Romans 13: 11-14; Matthew 24: 36-44
November 27, 2016

Here we are, the first Sunday of Advent already! Advent is about looking ahead...ahead to Christmas and as our readings indicate, ahead to the coming again of Jesus. But Advent is to be about more than just looking ahead, it is about hope for that future. And our Advent readings always include some prophecy about the coming days.

Jeremiah 32: 1-6; Colossians 1: 1-11; Luke 23: 33-43

There has been much written and spoken on the state of our nation's leadership after our contentious and bitter presidential election. We elected a man who epitomizes in many ways the world's view of greatness: he made lots of money. He gets his way on most things. He's never wrong...in his opinion. Ever since we've heard the myth that George Washington rejected the possibility of becoming the King of the United States we have had presidents with various leadership desires, skills and abilities. But one thing they had in common, they aspired to be great leaders.
Today the church recognizes as Christ the King Sunday.

Spiritual Endurance by Judy Holmes

Jesus said “By your endurance, you will gain your soul.” He says this in his last speech during his public ministry. Our scripture reading today is the first half of Jesus' final public speech. Scholars parcel Jesus' final address into five parts: 1. an opening exhortation that Christians not be led astray about what is to be; 2. two listings of cosmic disasters; 3. events to happen before the end of the world; 4. the persecution of Christians & the destruction of Jerusalem; and 5. a final exhortation to remain vigilant & alert.

Eternal Comfort and Good Hope

Haggai 1:15b-2:9; 2 Thessalonians 2:1-5, 13-17; Luke 20:27-38November 6, 2016
Our Thessalonians reading begins with Paul referencing the coming again of Jesus, “As to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him we beg you... not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed.” Paul is telling his readers not to focus so much on the timing and events related to the Lord's coming, but to call to mind the assurances that we have been given that everything is under the Lord's control. He wrote this assurance to Thessalonica because there was talk going around that Jesus had returned and they'd missed it! They didn't and we still wait, but are reminded not to get shaken or alarmed worrying about the details, God has the details well in hand.
But we do want to be well aware of what is essential in the promises of God's saving grace: first and foremost, we are chosen by God!
