Opening hymn: While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks by Night 58

Malachi 4: 2-6: Malachi 4:2-6 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
2 But for you who revere my name the sun of righteousness shall rise, with healing in its wings.
Hark the Herald Angels Sing 31 PH
You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall. 3 And you shall tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet, on the day when I act, says the Lord of hosts.
4 Remember the teaching of my servant Moses, the statutes and ordinances that I commanded him at Horeb for all Israel.
5 Lo, I will send you the prophet Elijah before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes. 6 He will turn the hearts of parents to their children and the hearts of children to their parents, so that I will not come and strike the land with a curse.
Joy to the world 40 PH

Isaiah 7: 10-16; Romans 1: 1-7; 17-19; Matthew 1: 18-25

Joy to the world, the Lord is come! We are all familiar with that carol, one of my favorites. It is the season of joy. So my title this morning reflects the fact that joy is not universal. “When Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly.” I've been involved in this conversation in our Tuesday bible study and in confirmation; How did Joseph feel?

Isaiah 2:1-5; Romans 13:11-14; Matthew 24: 36-44
December 1, 2019 1st Sunday of Advent

The prophet Isaiah is the most often quoted Old Testament writer in the New Testament. He is also the most often read book in synagogue other than the Torah. His words were a mixture of doom and deliverance. The doom was the recurring attacks by foreign nations caused by the sin of the nation. Isaiah addresses the people in chapter 1, “Ah, sinful nation, people laden with iniquity, offspring who do evil, children who deal corruptly, who have forsaken the Lord, who have despised the holy one of Israel.” He's not pulling any punches here. But he doesn't leave them condemned. He offers the promise of deliverance including promises of salvation, of a king who would rule the nations, the prince of peace. Today, we associate Isaiah with prophesies of the birth of Jesus.
