Today is Epiphany Sunday. When we have an epiphany, it means we have a sudden perception of the nature or meaning of something. The term comes from the Greek meaning “manifestation” or “revealing”. The church marks Epiphany as the time when the wise men visited Jesus. We can surmise more meaning—God is 'manifest' in the baby Jesus and the wise men visiting represent the world's 'perception' or understanding of who the Christ child truly is: God with us, Emmanuel.
But as we look back at the story of the birth of the savior we may note, most of the world missed him. These 'three' kings studied the stars and perceived an important event in the world. The shepherds were welcomed to be witnesses to the miracles through the announcement of the angels. But who else noticed?
