Every once in a while a national holiday falls on a Sunday. Today is Independence Day, the anniversary of America's declaration of our independence. Specifically, it was independence from England, but I want to look at the place of God in that process and into today.
The lead editorial in this week's Christian Century was about the connection between Christianity and American patriotism. The impetus of the article was a new bible being advertised, the “God Bless the USA Bible.” Christian Century's editor Peter W. Marty writes, “Merging Christian and American identities distorts both the Christian faith and our nation's constitutional democracy.” And he's correct, and so we as Christians need to wisely balance our understanding of Jesus as Lord and Savior in our lives with the belief that America was indeed founded with a strong belief and reliance on God. We are not established as a Christian nation; neither are we a nation established without the hand of God being called upon to bless us.
