Last Sunday I asked the question, “Why baptism?” While I'm not writing a series, today's title came up as “Why Church?” I read a couple of articles about how the church is in many ways counter-intuitive. Pastor Joyce Shin made the point that when we want instruction or expertise, we find an individual who is an expert to help us with our decision making. She says “we are unlikely to trust a crowd of people to be well-informed (or) make good decisions. Such suspicion has been exacerbated by our recognition that peer pressure or the dynamics of group-think wield powerful influences. Given such suspicions of crowds, what are we to make of the church? How are we to understand the church’s potential for seeking truth, or making good decisions, for being wise?”
